We talked about working together to Keep It Rural and a\u00a0coalition was born.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we celebrate the preserved historic farmland as part of Leon County&#8217;s rural heritage.\u00a0This farmland and homesite was settled by Adlai &#8220;Jack&#8221; and Rosetta Crump many decades ago. Adlai Stevenson &#8220;Jack&#8221; Crump, lived in Leon County his entire life. \u00a0A business owner, community leader and successful farmer, Crump was awarded \u00a0the &#8220;Outstanding Farmer in America,&#8221; by the U.S.D.A. Jack and Rosetta Crump&#8217;s family are known for\u00a0their\u00a0entrepreneurial leadership\u00a0and long standing community service. Crump Road was named after this Leon County family of many generations.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>So come on out and enjoy live music, locally-grown food, and real down-home fun! where it began!<\/h3>\n<p>Miccosukee Road is an old canopy road with huge trees forming a beautiful \u00a0canopy along its entire length. \u00a0At the Crump and Miccosukee intersection sits at the end of the eight mile long Miccosukee Greenway \u2013 a beautiful rural park that connects into the City of Tallahassee, many miles away. \u00a0Along Crump Road are crop fields, horse farms, sod farms, houses on lots of acres and miles of frontage of the Welaunee Plantation pine forest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/keepitrural.curg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/back-shot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-173 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/keepitrural.curg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/back-shot-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"back shot\" width=\"291\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"http:\/\/keepitrural.curg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/back-shot-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/keepitrural.curg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/back-shot-1024x680.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/keepitrural.curg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/back-shot-800x531.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 291px) 100vw, 291px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From a rural landscape to an urban one &#8211; NOT WANTED HERE!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/keepitrural.curg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Kangaroo-1-e1393386089683.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-64 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/keepitrural.curg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Kangaroo-1-e1393386089683-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Kangaroo 1\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/keepitrural.curg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Kangaroo-1-e1393386089683-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/keepitrural.curg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Kangaroo-1-e1393386089683-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A permit for a large gas station and convenience store near the intersection of Crump and Miccosukee Roads in Leon County was approved May 8!\u00a0 This proposed development for a gas station is the first and only one that has been submitted for permitting in the rural area since the adoption of the Comprehensive Plan in 1992. \u00a0The design is for a large station with seven\u00a0 pumps and a 3000 square foot convenience store. \u00a0In addition, there is an impervious area exceeding 26,000 sq. ft.\u00a0 \u2013 more than half an acre of asphalt and pavement!<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Commercial Development could be built all over rural Leon County if\u00a0this permit isn&#8217;t stopped right now!<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/keepitrural.curg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Entire-County-RFC-Commercial.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-165\" src=\"http:\/\/keepitrural.curg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Map-of-Commercial-Intersection-Potential-300x215.jpeg\" alt=\"Map of Commercial Intersection Potential\" width=\"312\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"http:\/\/keepitrural.curg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Map-of-Commercial-Intersection-Potential-300x215.jpeg 300w, http:\/\/keepitrural.curg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Map-of-Commercial-Intersection-Potential.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 312px) 100vw, 312px\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><strong>The Impact of the Decision<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If this station\u2019s permit is not challenged and appealed, there are over one hundred\u00a0other rural intersections\u00a0in Leon County where this sort of unwanted and large commercial\u00a0development could be built.\u00a0\u00a0This permit\u00a0will set a precedent, paving the way for other developers to change, even destroy, the nature of our county\u2019s rural landscape.\u00a0 Each of these dots represents a spot that could be commercially developed under our current Comprehensive Plan.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ff00;\"><em><strong>Green = 10,000 sq ft \u00a0&#8211; intersections of local and major roads<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br \/>\nCommercial development is allowed at any intersection of a local road\u00a0along the major roads (aka &#8220;arterials&#8221;):<br \/>\n<strong>Meridian, Thomasville, Centerville, Miccosukee, Mahan, Appalachee Parkway, Tram, Woodville Highway, Crawfordville, Blounstown and North Monroe.<\/strong> Most of these\u00a0intersections are not shown on the road because\u00a0there are so many of them!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Blue = 20,000 sq ft\u00a0allowed &#8211; intersections of minor and major roads<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;connectors&#8221; &amp; &#8220;arterials&#8221; such as <strong>Crump &amp; Roberts, Crump &amp;\u00a0Miccosukee, Crump &amp; Appalachee, Miccosukee &amp; Iamonia Lake<\/strong>, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\">Pink = 50,000 sq ft allowed &#8211; intersections edge of rural area<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nIn the &#8220;urban fringe&#8221; area which is sandwiched between the suburban neighborhoods and rural lands such as\u00a0<strong>Mahan &amp;\u00a0Crump, Centerville &amp; Bradfordville &amp; Roberts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are over 50 local road intersections with Meridan, Thomasville<br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Red = Rural Communities: Woodville, Fort Braden, Miccosukee, Chaires. \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">T<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">his is where small scale commercial development belongs, in the rural communities where folks congregate\u00a0naturally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The very spot where the Crump Road gas station would reside is sacred farm land.\u00a0 The humble house of Adlai Stevenson &#8220;Jack&#8221;\u00a0Crump sits on this property. \u00a0Crump Road was named after Jack&#8217;s grandfather, Guy Crump. \u00a0 The proposed site is also within five hundred feet of the Miccosukee Canopy Road&#8211;one of Leon County\u2019s treasured jewels and natural wonders.\u00a0 If it can happen here, it can happen anywhere in our county. \u00a0 Citizens countywide must band together and not allow this to happen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/keepitrural.curg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/10155334_452594584871183_1179423022_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-172 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/keepitrural.curg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/10155334_452594584871183_1179423022_n-300x98.jpg\" alt=\"10155334_452594584871183_1179423022_n\" width=\"300\" height=\"98\" srcset=\"http:\/\/keepitrural.curg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/10155334_452594584871183_1179423022_n-300x98.jpg 300w, http:\/\/keepitrural.curg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/10155334_452594584871183_1179423022_n-800x263.jpg 800w, http:\/\/keepitrural.curg.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/10155334_452594584871183_1179423022_n.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Keep\u00a0It Rural is here to fight and protect<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As soon as this business proposal began its permitting process, Keep it Rural organizers activated the community, packed the hearings, held rallies, informed the press, connected our\u00a0Leon County commissioners and the county\u2019s permitting staff.\u00a0 We printed fliers, petitioned neighbors, and spread the word.\u00a0 The response has been overwhelmingly powerful.<\/p>\n<p>But we have exhausted this route of speaking out, protesting and talking to officials. \u00a0They made the decision to permit the development in spite our of arguments and concerns. \u00a0So now the permit has to be challenged through the legal hearing process that Leon County has established.<\/p>\n<p>Now is the time for even more conviction!<\/p>\n<p>One of our neighbors has started the legal process by filing a petition which allows the decision to be reconsidered. \u00a0This neighbor needs our help because this is now the only way to stop this gas station and the precedent it will set of allowing commercial development all over the rural area.<\/p>\n<p>Your Keep it Rural organizers (a core group of a half-dozen average citizens) have personally contributed over $10,000 to support\u00a0the appeal, but much more is needed.\u00a0 We have retained a well known and experienced\u00a0land use attorney, and we have filed the initial appeal.\u00a0 We need your support.\u00a0 \u00a0Documents, forms, filings, and deadlines must be done exactly as required by law. \u00a0 Expert witnesses will be necessary to dispute the county staff\u2019s interpretation and application of law.\u00a0 All of this comes with a price, and the process is extensive.\u00a0 It involves rulings by a Special Master (similar to an Administrative Judge) , the Board of County Commissioners \u00a0(BCC), and possibly the Circuit court. \u00a0 All of these are separate hearings.\u00a0 That\u2019s why Keep it Rural is asking you to pitch in and save the sacred nature of our rural landscape.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contribute what you can!<\/strong><br \/>\nSend and make checks out to:<br \/>\nKeep It Rural<br \/>\n9601-54 Miccosukee Road<br \/>\nTallahassee, FL 32309<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Facebook\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Stay Informed The gas station and convenience store development was stopped.
